Back from our extended mid-summer break, the Fergus Falls Area Race Series action heats back up with the results from last weekend's Hoot Lake Triathlon.
Moving up into first place is Mary Ellen Tungseth, whose top 10 triathlon finish vaulted her ahead of previous leader Bridget Leonard, who moves back down to 3rd. Joellen Kohlman-Petrick (second place), like our leader, is 3 for 3 and should she continue with this streak, could give Tungseth a run for her money (or in this case, a really nice trophy).
While the 30-39 age group dominates the women's top 10, keep an eye on the competition in the next age group up. Lynn Wolters holds on to her lead over a talented bunch of athletes by only the smallest of margins. And check out Makenna Stenstrom -- don't let her youth fool you. She's gunning for a top 5 finish this year.
On the men's side, after two episodes of the Paul Shol show, we have a new leader. Fergus Falls' own favorite godfather of credit unions, Nicolai Mariotti, rode his pasta and red wine-fuled Bianchi (we don't know if any of these stereotypes are necessarily true, but he said it was OK to use them) to a quick finish, nabbing 130 points in the process and proving the truth of our favorite racing strategy "He who shows up, wins." We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays our, with last year's winner Dave Jensen in second and Shol in third now ineligible for the 6th race bonus of 50 points but not out of the hunt by any means.
Next up is the Viking Challenge, a mud-filled romp through the hills of Otter Tail County. Careful readers of this blog will know the secret way that the Viking Challenge can supercharge your point total; we will say no more and leave it up to your sleuthing skills to figure that one out.
