The Fergus Falls Area Race Series is a 6-month long marathon punctuated by quick sprints of activity. Case in point: this week. Following another mud-filled Viking Challenge romp this past weekend in the Erhard Hills, our competitors must now switch gears (literally) and prepare for the road test of the Central Lakes Cycle Duathlon.
Going into the Du, series leaders Nick Mariotti and Joellen Kohlman-Petrick just turned things up to 11 with their hack of the series scoring system, which allows for double points at the Viking Challenge. Both of these fierce competitors showed why they are on top by opting to run the 5k AND the 10k on Saturday morning. Though neither one walked away with the $1,000 prize, they both posted highly respectable male/female 3rd place finishes in the 5k following a 2nd place (Kohlman-Petrick) and 6th place (Mariotti) start to the day in the 10k. What's a cool thousand compared to the glory of being the series leader, anyway?
With some of the rest of the leaderboard opting to keep their shoes clean, other notable mudder performances have caused a bit of churn in the standings. Ashley Joy Hoff and Aspen Rohde are now 4/4 and are moving into bonus point territory, which always makes things interesting. With two events left in the season, there is still time to make a move and snag a top spot. Prizes and fame await!
