Let's not beat around the bush here. If your name is not Nick Mariotti or Joellen Kohlman-Petrick, you're just not going to win the series this year. Don't get discouraged; you did a great job. But as sure as it's a windy day for the Duathlon, our leaders, they of perfect attendance, have now accumulated enough points to make an upset mathematically impossible. So we offer a hearty congratulations to them, and look forward to seeing them do a victory lap and receive their well-earned prizes at the Turkey Trot.
This is not to say that there haven't been others in hard pursuit. Mark Undseth is making a strong case this year, and though dogged persistence, has managed to keep past winner Dave Jensen at bay with 10 points separating them. With one event left and Undseth poised to move into bonus point territory will it be enough? Stay tuned.
Jess Knutson's strong third place finish today moved her into a solid second place ahead of last year's winner, Mary Ellen Tungseth, who opted to engage in some Team Tungseth bonding today over some nice Otter Tail County winds and hills. This contest is not over yet, and we're sharpening our pencils in anticipation of some fast math at the Turkey Trot to see who comes out on top.
Sympathies go out to Ashley Joy Hoff, who was looking to continue her perfect series attendance streak, but flatted on the second bike and didn't finish the race. Ditto for Keven Crabtree and others who experienced breakdowns. The course was hungry for bikes! Kudos to the support crew (and even other competitors) who were quick to lend a helping hand.
Series participants, past and present, watch your inbox in the next couple of days for a special offer for the final race of the season, the Fergus Falls Turkey Trot. We'd like to see all of your smiling faces one last time, and we have ways to make that happen.
