After a long midsummer break, area athletes came out in force for the 25th annual Hoot Lake Triathlon. On the men's side of the leaderboard, we may start to have some clarity on how things are going to shape up, as returning series champion Nick Mariotti has opened up a 50 point lead over challenger A.J. Groebner, though with the series moving back to land-based events and both athletes going into bonus point territory from here on out, this will be a contest to watch up through the finish. Mitch Wellman also put in a strong top 10 performance, which puts him comfortably in third for the series.
If the men's race is close, then the women are even closer. Only 6 points separate 2016 winner JoEllen Kohlman-Petrick from the hard-charging Shauna Overgaard. These two have been neck-and-neck all year and we don't see that ending any time soon. Kudos also to Jess Knutson, who has cemented her third place standing after notching a solid 5th place finish at Hoot Lake.
The series goes into hibernation again until fall, when wheels will roll for the Central Lake Cycle 24/7 Duathlon.
