The rain came and went and came back again at the Central Lakes Cycle David Grotberg Memorial 24/7 Duathlon and 5k, but the competition never wavered. With the addition of a 5k to the activities this year and a BBQ benefit to help the Christenson family defray medical costs for their son Connor as he fights an auto-immune disease, Central Lakes Cycle was packed to the rafters today with athletes and well-wishers alike.
Family sweeps were in fashion, with father-daugher duo Greta and Brad Christenson taking the 1-2 spot in the 5k and power couple Jason and Kierann Toth bringing home the hardware in the Duathlon.
The series remains close on both the men's and women's side, with Nick Mariotti maintaining his lead over challenger A.J. Groebner, 552.02 to 504.90. We hope to see both of them at the final event in the series, the Fergus Falls Turkey Trot. Third place remains up for grabs, with James Botnen, Mitch Wellman, Bruce Money, and Jason Glynn all in the running.
On the women's side, JoEllen "I just completed an Ironman 2 weeks ago, NBD" Kohlman-Petrick and Shauna Overgaard continue to keep it fun. With only 25 points separating them, and with the final race in the series moving back to road racing, which has been the domain of Overgaard this year, it's going to be an exciting finish. Jess Knutson joins the leaders to round out the top three and is one of the six women and three men who are on track to have participated in all the series races this year.
